Passion Pit - Take A Walk
The first single from Passion Pit’s highly anticipated sophmore album Gossamer is every bit as catchy as the band’s 2009 breakthrough Manners. Lyrically, though, it’s a considerable departure from the sticky songs of love that brought their debut effort such universal acclaim.
‘Take A Walk’ is a surprisingly honest commentary on the realities of the American Dream, presumably based on the life of an immigrant grandparent. It’s a heavy subject that younger audiences might find harder to relate to, and yet it’s just as applicable to anyone on the precipice of adulthood in the current economic climate.
Gossamer is out on July 24th.
Daughn Gibson - In the Beginning
An ex-trucker turned singer-songwriter, 31-year-old Daughn Gibson of Pennsylvania is as much a surprise as he’s a breath of fresh air in the alternative country genre.
His debut album All Hell is a collection of ghostly ballads of small-town melancholy and gothic Americana, delivered over a rich baritone voice hauntingly reminiscent of Johnny Cash.
It’s not quite anything like you’ve heard before and that’s what makes him so intriguing and arguably the most hype-worthy new artist on the block.
All Hell is out now on Spotify.
St. Lucia - The Old House Is Gone
This thoroughly infectious track is the summer anthem you could listen to all year. With an impressive self-titled EP out already, St. Lucia is one to watch out for in 2012.
Purity Ring - Obedear
Canadian future pop duo Purity Ring was one of last year’s best surprises and they have been hard at work on their impending debut LP, “Shrines”, in proving exactly why. Fusing glittering synths and seductively chilled vocals, track no.9 ‘Obedear’ does just that. Suffice to say, the album couldn’t come sooner.
Shrines is out on July 24th via 4AD and Last Gang.
Airhead - Wait
Airhead is a London-based producer of abstract, experimental sounds much like James Blake in his early days. In fact, having already collaborated with the Mercury-nominated musician on the single, “Pembroke”, Airhead is now out to prove he can follow in Blake’s footsteps as a successful solo electronic artist. His new single, “Wait”, is just a taste of what’s to come.
